For Azerbaijan, this year’s Cannes Film Festival was special. It was the first time that a film produced and filmed by a Russian-Azerbaijani team was officially selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Philosophic parable SONUNCU (The Last one) is a co-production between BUTA Films and film studio Azerbaijanfilm. It has earned the highest marks from foreign professionals.

This original and deep drama was filmed in a town called Shabran, 120 km away from Baku. SONUNCU is not just a film — it is a remarkable success story for young producers Maria Ivanova and Nasib Piriyev (Buta Films). Having shot and released over 80 documentaries, this accomplished duo has managed to gain entry into the most prestigious film festival in Europe with their first feature film.

From May 2014 SONUNCU (The Last One) has continued its journey participating in the world`s biggest festivals.

At London City Film Festival the film was awarded with the audience prize, it was awarded Best Film at Izmir International Film Festivaland won the Young Jury Prize at French international short film festival Courts Devant. At the Sao Paolo International Film Festival the film was awarded with SESc TV Award for Best Debut 2014.

SONUNCU also participated in: 20 Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, 36 Moscow International Film Festival,Kinotavr, Big Sur International Short film Screening Series,Film Festival Della Lessinnia, Aye-Aye Film Festival Nancy Lorraine, Voices 2014, Koroche, Sarajevo Film Festival, Batumi International Art-House Film Festival, Athens International Film Festival,Bridge Film Fest Kosovo, SHNIT Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Cyprus, Asiana International Short Film Festival, Trieste Film Festival, Polish Film Festival Zubroffka, Singapore International Film Festival — this is only a short list of the festivals in which the film is participating and will be participating
